Installation
of Operating System Patches, Fixes and Updates
Only
authorised systems administrators, or designated third parties (if this
process is outsourced) are permitted to undertake the task of updating
operating software.
All
security fixes, program updates, command scripts, and the like provided
by operating system vendors, official computer emergency response teams
and other trusted third parties must be installed as listed below:-
Within the
Trusted Domain

Urgent within 1 week

Everything else monthly
Other

Urgent within 24 hours
§
Medium within 1 week
§
Low monthly

Ascertain the nature
of the fix or patch and whether there is the likelihood that other
problems will occur as a result of installation.

Ensure that the
original operating system CDs are onsite should the system need to
be reinstated.

Advise all staff
when the upgrade is going to occur and to report any problems to the
IT Systems Helpdesk.

Patches, fixes and
updates must be installed out of normal working hours.

Once installed, log
into a PC as a normal user, with general privileges and test that
systems operate as expected.

If not, restore the
operating system to its former, trusted state.

Document details of the
nature of the patch or fix, the date the fix was installed, the name
of the machine it was installed on and the administrator or agent
who installed it.
